Hi

We have also built a building block that lists all students in a course and the group(s) to which they belong. It is compatible with version 9.1 SP2 and above. This list can be printed and exported to .csv format. For example screenshot, please see http://info.uwe.ac.uk/online/blackboard/staff/guides/groups/viewer.asp .

We are happy to provide the building block on an 'as-is', unsupported basis, should you wish to install it.

We hope to add this to http://projects.oscelot.org/gf/ in the near future, however, if you want a copy please email us off-list.

Kind regards
Simon

Travis,

This sounds really useful. Can I ask, a) is this publicly available, and if so, b) is there a version available for Blackboard9.1?

Joyce,

I agree with you that it seems very odd for Bb to not deliver that functionality. We were previously on Bb8 with Batch GE Group Manager and our user community couldn't deal without a group management tool so we built our own building block. Since self-enrol groups are also a type of group, we can use the same tool to obtain a single downloadable CSV file with all the group memberships throughout the course. You can see it in action at http://www.lms.unimelb.edu.au/animations/group_agm.html (YouTube walkthrough), or pages 8-9 of http://www.lms.unimelb.edu.au/user_guides/groups_guide.pdf (PDF guide) if you're interested in how we tackled it.

  All the best,

Trav.

Another extremely frustrating aspect is that there is no way to produce a list of group memberships so, if you have set up, for example, a group set of 25 self-enrol groups, there is no way of generating a list of the group members.

It's a perfectly logical task to expect from the system but if feels like the developers just got fed up, leaving the tool unfinished.

Kevin,

I don't think Blackboard has the database design you need to manage large groups. There are many ways to populate them initially, but as Group Membership does not have a corresponding DataSourceKey entry to indicate who creates/controls the Group membership, you are left in the Wild West after that. Unlike CourseMembership, Courses and Users, there is no way for you to then update the memberships again as you can't differentiate between group memberships created using your SIS feed and those created by any Tom Dick or Harriet using the GUI.

It is a long standing enhancement request from me, but never seems to bubble up to the top.

Malcolm.

I have a query regarding the managing large groups in bb9.1 (SP3) courses. Can we port over student groups from SITS into specific groups into BB courses. As we have already set up the groups in SITS. This would mean we don't have to manually set up 100's of groups in 100's of modules?

Or would the Malcolm Murray "Sign up" block allow us to do this?

Regards.
Kevin Brace.
