Dear Allstat,
A common type of question is:
How regularly do you use ABC? Never (0), Occasionally (1), Often (2), Always (3)
How regularly do you use XYZ? Never (0), Occasionally (1), Often (2), Always (3)
If a respondent selects Never (0) it means they don't use it (ABC or XYZ). If a respondent selects either Occasionally (1), Often (2), or Always (3), it means they use it.
It seems logical during analysis to convert the answers to binary responses. That is, Never (0) stays the same (recoded as NO) and Occasionally (1), Often (2), or Always (3) recoded as 1 (i.e. YES).
Does anyone know of any previous research that treated their data in this way? I need a reference!
Simon
