i can't remember if herzog uses the term 'old people'. i picked it up from
my friend the novelist who's writing a novel inspired by chauvet. in the
novel, which involves a meeting of humans and neanderthals, the neanderthals
call themselves 'the old people'. they are living in the former entrance to
the chauvet cave, before the rockslide that obscured it; humans have not
lived there for some time in the time-frame of the novel.
but i am sure the term has been widely used.
