Archive Assistant (Trainee)

The National Co-operative Archive is recruiting an Archive Assistant (Trainee) for fixed term of 12 months to assist in the transfer of a large acquisition of co-operative archive material.
The Co-operative Group, founded in 1863, is the largest UK co-operative society and is based in Manchester. In 2012 the Co-operative Group will be moving to new premises from the buildings that it has occupied since the first half of the twentieth century. In preparation for the move all the buildings are being cleared and under the guidance of the National Co-operative Archive the records of the Co-operative Group are being assessed for permanent preservation.
The Archive Assistant Trainee will work alongside the Archivist to locate, list, appraise and transfer the archival records from the Co-operative Group to the National Co-operative Archive. The post will provide pre-course experience to a graduate prior to undergoing professional training on one of the recognised archive courses. The post will also involve assistance in the sorting of artefacts.
You should be educated to degree level or equivalent, possess good interpersonal and communication skills, have strong self initiative and be able to work independently, and you should have a genuine desire to develop skills in advance of taking a postgraduate qualification in archival administration. Experience of working within an archive or records management role is required, though this need not be extensive.
