Dear All,
I agree that ARA should consider having a non-qualified section to its advertisements. However, having said (and lets be honest) fewer and fewer organisations are using ARC to advertise their posts, most preferring this list-serve which is free and easy to use, and of course non-members and trainees can access straight away.
I currently work in the Museum sector; the association recommends (2009, so a little out of date) the following for curatorial posts:
* £16,000-£19,250 starting salary for a a basic entry or trainee level role, with no expectation of a post-graduate qualification
* £19,750-£23,750 for entry level with post-grad qualification
* £24,250-£26,750 for two or three years experience, taking on responsibilities & focused knowledge
and so on etc.......
Perhaps ARA needs to be more specific in its recommendations and consider a more in-depth paper like the Museums Association, which is worth a look. See: http://www.museumsassociation.org/download?id=18334
For those of us not lucky enough to be in permanent full-time posts, so recent after qualifying (2008), the issue of salary is a huge concern and frankly often quite depressing, particularly those which are being advertised as low as the one at the NRM, but more pressing for many of us is just being able to find and secure a post, long or short-term, in the first place.
Negotiating an appropriate salary for the skills required for each post is perhaps something we simply need to get better at doing? My partner works in the Engineering sector and is amazed that I haven't 'negotiated' a salary before now, which is common-place in his line of work, as it is in many others.
I very much look forward to the conference this year which is looking at advocating our profession - which is seems has come at just the right time given all these recent discussions.
Kind regards,
Sandra Marsh
