These are enlightening (as are the other examples by Nick). I've split the thread away from the original a little to 'keep it clean'
Now I see the use of a wiki per se. That's easy, and I considered it for http://darrmouthmuseum.org and rejected it because I detest mediawiki software ;). I have no issues with opening up a museum's site to public contributions or to leaving it locked shut for authorised users only.
The thing is I just do not consider a wiki of any description to be 'social media'. It;s like the rush to 'Web 2.0' that is really just a jargonesque buzzword (and is deprecated by Tim Berners Lee)
I am wondering, without criticising the survey that originated this thought in any way, how Wikipedia (not Mediawiki, but Wikipedia itself) is social media in the purest sense of the phrase and how a museum might use Wikipedia (again, not Mediawiki, but Wikipedia, the august and often incorrect organ of idiocracy (the film has to be seen to be believed)). Can one make use of this organ as a museum?
I ask because Wikipedia is resolutely defended by "The Wisdom of Crowds", or ultimate dilution as can be seen with some articles.
I'm also interested in other items in the long tail such as Dogg and Tripover. Show me that they have a benefit for a little organisation such as our own, and I'll be in like Flint, so to speak.
