Give Your Content The Audience It Deserves

In recent conversations with a wide range of clients in the medical field
(hospitals, physicians networks and EMR providers), a theme has been
emerging around their content aspirations. In their own way, each wants to
serve as patient or clinician educators.

As someone who entered agency life from a newspaper/web producer/web
developer background, this makes me smile. I believe we're in the early
stages of a whole new wave of content creation and sharing. This new wave
is powered by tools that will serve those with valuable insights very
well, enabling them to cultivate ambassadors for thought leadership.

The tools to which I'm referring -- Quora and Tumblr and Google's social
search -- are all relatively new, and combine for a truly powerful way to
connect relevant content to an audience that's becoming more sophisticated
about how to manage the information overload they're experiencing every
day.

What is Quora?
.
Started in the summer of 2009, Quora describes itself as "a continually
improving collection of questions and answers created, edited, and
organized by everyone who uses it." Quora is intended to be a site with
ongoing engagement, where users can follow topics as well as other users,
and where sharing of content is encouraged.

I have been helping people find information for over forty years. Way back
in time we did this without computers. Today we have a confusing variety
of ways to learn about a topic. The problem is that just because something
out there is new and sexy, does not make that resource better or even
good. There are two problems that I find often with those seeking
information. First many people do not think through the subject they are
seeking to learn about and secondly they have not taken time to learn how
to use search tools effectively. I created the phrase that I have
liberally scattered around the internet, "Meet the Googles". Sources like
Google Scholar, Google Books, Google News Archive, SCIRUS, and Temple
Summon Search are far more likely to find a searcher or researcher quality
vetted information than whatever is the latest iteration of the online
water fountain chit chat zone. Indeed public libraries in many states
provide card holders with access to online databases from vendors like
EBSCOHost, ProQuest, FirstSearch and others that permit more complex and
precise searches than the one step style of searching provided by internet
search tools like Google and Bing. Using tools like these will usually
lead those needing quality information to better and more resources than
the various forms of social networking found on the internet's water
cooler circuit.
