Penal Reform and Service Provision
Tuesday 13th September 2011
University of Birmingham
The seminar will consider the issues raised by the third sector's dual role in campaigning and penal reform and in service provision and will explore the issues and tensions raised by Third Sector Organisations providing core criminal justice services. Confirmed speakers include: Kelly Hannah-Moffat (University of Toronto), Paul McDowell (Nacro), Andrew Neilson (Howard League), Juliet Lyon (Prison Reform Trust), Stephen Shaw (former Prisons and Probation Ombudsman), Mike Nellis (University of Strathclyde). A draft programme is available at: www.law.leeds.ac.uk/research/projects/the-third-sector-in-criminal-justice/.
The seminar fits into a wider programme of six seminars funded by the Economic and Social Research Council which aim to bring together leading academics from a range of disciplines, policy makers, criminal justice providers and representatives from third sector organisations (TSOs) in order to critically explore third sector (voluntary, charitable and non-governmental organisations) involvement in the criminal justice system and consider how it might develop over time. Information about the series and reports and presentations can be found at: http://www.law.leeds.ac.uk/research/projects/the-third-sector-in-criminal-justice/
