The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHoSTM) at Imperial College London is offering a 3-year AHRC-funded doctoral studentship on the topic of ‘Veterinary training and veterinary work: A female perspective, 1919-2000’, to commence in October 2011 or January 2012.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growing body of knowledge about women in science, and also to develop new perspectives on the history of the veterinary profession. CHoSTM has a thriving PhD programme, and was judged the top history department in the United Kingdom in the 2008 RAE.
The studentship is in collaboration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Charitable Trust. Based in Westminster, the Trust’s library holds a considerable quantity of relevant archival material. In addition to facilities at Imperial College, the successful student will be allocated a desk space, computing facilities, training and support by the RCVS Charitable Trust, along with £1000/yr for research expenses. They will also carry out some small tasks on behalf of the RCVS Charitable Trust, which are relevant to their research and will build transferable skills, eg writing short historical accounts for the website.
The studentship is open to UK or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for the last three years. It includes fees and, for UK students only, a stipend of £16,140 per year for three years. Applicants should hold a first or upper second class degree, and hold or be studying for an MSc or MA degree in a relevant area of history. An overall MSc/MA grade of 65% or more is required. Applicants should also fulfil Imperial College English language requirements, and be supported by two strong academic references. Further details concerning eligibility are available via the AHRC website at http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/FundingOpportunities/Documents/GuidetoStudentFunding
Applicants should send a copy of their curriculum vitae, the names and addresses of two referees, a sample of their written work, and a statement outlining their academic interests and reasons for applying for this studentship to [log in to unmask] .
