medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
My punctuation seems to have attached itself to the link I gave,
preventing it from working. Apologies, and herewith a working link!

In addition to the reliquary of Martha cited by John, I can offer some
early images of the Raising of Lazarus:

end of row 2 (with link for other sides of the sarcophagus): an early
5th c. sarcophagus; I read the tree to the left (with bird) as a
reference to the Tree of Life
end of row 4 (with link for other parts of the portable altar): the
Arnulf Ciborium, c.890
also end of row 1: an abraded glass beaker, 4th to 5th c.; unfortunately
when I photographed it years ago I was mostly interested in the
technique of engraving (and film was expensive), so I got only Christ
and not Lazarus. I was given a plaster cast by the curator in Toledo,
which I will eventually photograph and post-- if anyone is particularly
interested in this object, I can move that project up in the queue.
best,
Genevra
