Hi John!
I guess you've seen the comparison tables at
http://www.wikimatrix.org/ ?
ScrewTurn's WYSIWYG-editing feature does look nice. Not an option for
us, though, because we recently moved to a LAMP server. We did the
boring obvious thing and installed MediaWiki, but it's a bit clunky in
places.
For commenting software, we've just started looking at Disqus, although
we want the wiki itself to get a bit bigger (it's not yet at critical
mass) before we consider enabling any discussion features. I'm toying
with the idea of initially using Disqus with most of the features
disabled and anonymous use permitted, just to add simple "Like" buttons
to exhibit pages, so that we could generate ranking lists of
"most-liked" exhibits, without people having to go through the hassle of
logging in or setting up accounts. But there's probably a simpler way of
doing that than installing a full-blown commenting system and switching
most of it off. I looked at a load of MediaWiki "ranking" extensions,
but they tended to be too sophisticated .. we just need a basic,
minimalist "like" button, not something that asks people to type in
percentages or numbers. There doesn't seem to be a simple MediaWiki
extension that does this.
Long-term, it'd be nice to use Disqus or some other similar system to
add an informal "comments" panel below most of the main wiki pages on
our site, where people could add their personal experiences of
particular toys.
