Not an answer (sorry!), but - I'm interested in this too, and would be very interested to see replies on this subject.
I'm not sure we would be able to generate much real income from selling images (especially as the costs of setting up an online shop would mean it would be a long time before we saw a return on the investment), but I do think a commercial image library could be a valuable publicity tool, for spreading the word about the resource, the collections, the museum etc. I know one or two professional picture researchers who favour museum websites for images rather than other sources such as SCRAN (which can complicate and slow a process which needs to be quick and straightforward). As a result, these museums are getting long-term and widespread recognition in a wide variety of publications, both on- and offline.
Best,
Helen

Subject: Selling image licences
We are starting to explore how we might make money from images of our
collection items - images of works of art, archival photos and physical
objects and I was wondering if anybody would be prepared to share on or
off list how they do this and what sort of income they manage to
generate.
Also interested in prints on demand that could be seamlessly linked to
our online collections website www.blackcountryhistory.org
<http://www.blackcountryhistory.org> so that users could order low cost
prints of items they find but we have no money for development work.
