13th July 2-4pm
ALISS (Association of Librarians and Information professionals in the Social Sciences). are pleased to announce an opportunity to visit the refurbished soas library plus its world famous archives.
The SOAS Library houses the world's greatest concentration of scholarly works on Asia, Africa and the Middle East. It contains more than 1.5 million volumes, many of them rare, written in hundreds of languages. Library treasures include a 9th century Tibetan prayer book, priceless Japanese scrolls, original maps of Africa drawn by the 19th century explorer David Livingstone and the first known writings in the Aboriginal language.
Phase 1 of the Library Transformation Project has recently been completed - this included the refurbishment of the ground floor of the library, new reception and entrance areas, new music practice rooms, group study rooms and a gallery exhibition space.
SOAS Library Special Collections reflect the British experience in Africa and Asia over the last 250 years, and include archives of missionary societies, businesses, NGOs and charities, and papers of individuals, including academics, diplomats and colonial administrators. Here you can consult archives, manuscripts, photographs, maps, audio-visual material and rare books relating to Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Australasia.
