An odd thing that I've found is that if your at the individual article level and you click on the pdf link in the top left corner you can save the file without any problems. The problem I'm seeing seems to only happen at the search results level. Anyone else seeing this?

That is interesting, because I have tried Firefox and Chrome and the problem is still there in all of them for me. Like you, I can right-click and 'save as' but, as I mentioned before, one of our users indicated that even this option was not available to him. The only option for him was the rather convoluted workaround I described earlier.
I have just tried examples from Wiley, IngentaConnect and Highwire and the saving functionality is fine there. So far ScienceDirect is the only example we have found of this problem.

We're also seeing this. I've quickly tested the pdf saving function in Chrome, Opera and FireFox and I've found no difficulties. The only thing that seem to work with IE was to right click on the pdf link, save the file and then open it in Adobe.
This is absolutely annoying. Now how am I going to explain this to our users without them looking at me crossed eyed and think I'm a bit loony?

There is a brief discussion of this on the Adobe forum at http ://forums.adobe.com/thread/794935?decorator=print& displayFullThread =true
Another option appears to be to force the PDF to load into the PDF Reader application itself, rather than in the web browser. Load the Reader application then go to Edit --> Preferences --> Internet then un-tick the option to 'Display PDF in browser' . The user who brought this problem to my attention says this allowed him to then save the PDF , although it does not appear to work for me. I am able to right-click the PDF on the ScienceDirect site and select 'save as' , but he says the option to save is absent when he tries that.
Both of the above are only workarounds and neither is ideal.

Yes, we have this problem too. Can you right-click on the PDF and select 'Save as...'?

Hi,
Is anyone else having problems saving pdfs on ScienceDirect when using either Firefox or Internet Explorer 8 and Adobe X. When a pdf is opened and you try to save it using the save icon, nothing happens. I've reported this to Elsevier , but they said that Adobe don't provide support and are unwilling to comment on the issue. Elsevier have suggested using Foxit . I have pointed out that their product should be compatible with the most widely used reader.
