The extra provider can have its own configuration file, of course.

Yes, the configuration file allows the admin to do that.
I generally try to avoid modifying such files: what comes with the
rpm and/or YAIM has been tested; if the file has been modified,
an rpm update may "silently" create a ".rpmnew" version and the
service may not run as it should; if the file is created by YAIM,
one could lose the changes or (e.g. if a post-configuration function
is used) there is the possibility the format has changed and the
original changes no longer work.
The BDII happens to have a mechanism that avoid such troubles,
viz. the providers directory.
