Members of this list might be interested in some recent developments at the
Names Project, where we've been working on improving the data in our
prototype researcher identifier system at http://names.mimas.ac.uk.
We've used the cleaned-up RAE 2008 data from the MERIT project to populate
the system with some 45,000 names of UK researchers. We're now looking to
expand and improve that data and have used information supplied to us by
Robert Gordon University from their repository as a test case: there's a
blog post about it here:
http://namesproject.wordpress.com/2011/07/21/improving-names-data-with-help-
from-institutions/. Hm, that link's a bit long - try
http://tinyurl.com/namespost if the first one doesn't work (must come up
with snappier blog post titles...). We'd like to do this for other
institutions, too, so please get in touch if you're interested.
The other activity we're working on at the moment is developing a plug-in
for the EPrints repository software that will automatically query the Names
data as part of the data-entry process. Phil Cross and Dan Needham will be
demo-ing this in a Pecha Kucha session at the Repository Fringe event in
Edinburgh (http://www.repositoryfringe.org/) - there's an introductory blog
post about this work at
http://namesproject.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/eprints-plug-in-project/.
Thanks to JISC for funding this project-within-a-project.
