About this UvA intitiative:
The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strongly international profile in a large number of disciplines in the field of language, history and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city. There are over 1,000 employees affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 8,000 students.
New impulses are required in order to continue developing education and research in the field of language and culture within the broader framework of the humanities. A humanities perspective is important because it provides the insight necessary to understand and intervene in a diverse range of social developments.
Therefore, the Faculty of Humanities is looking for a new generation of scholars. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree and to have a broad background in the humanities. It goes without saying that they should be familiar with the latest developments in their field. They should also be able to combine solid research with innovative teaching. Outstanding didactic qualities and an affinity with students are required. It is a crucial requirement that candidates are capable of teaching a wide variety of subjects, and that they will contribute to the Faculty's envisaged expansion and modernisation by bridging gaps between disciplines. They will also be willing to teach undergraduate courses on subjects that fall beyond their immediate field of expertise.
The Faculty of Humanities offers you the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers at research institutes that - partly as a result of their multidisciplinary approach - enjoy worldwide renown. You will be teaching in a dynamic context in which new educational methods are being developed.
Together with other new lecturers you will participate in a comprehensive introductory programme. You will be supervised closely during the first year of your appointment. Additional didactical training is also part of the appointment. Based on the candidate's educational portfolio, previously acquired competences will be taken into consideration. The introductory programme includes obtaining the 'basic training qualification'.
