'Climate Change, Consumption and Daily Life: The Role of the State'
BSA Climate Change Study Group Event
23rd November 2011
Manchester University (North Campus)
10.00 - 17.00
You are invited to join the BSA Climate Change study group at a seminar exploring the role of the
state in climate change, consumption and daily life. The event will be structured around short talks
to introduce key ideas and topics which will be taken up in whole group discussions. Speakers will
be confirmed shortly.
In existing research the role of the state in achieving transitions toward more sustainable forms
of practice features in a number of different ways. The role the state has played in major
historical socio-technical transitions, critiques of contemporary forms of government and of
particular policy approaches, and the possible roles the state could or even should play in creating
sustainable futures, have all been examined in varying ways across disciplinary fields. The current
thinking about the role of the state in relation to climate change governance and, in particular, in
its relation to changing daily practice is thus extensive, but it rarely forms the focal point of
work. This seminar aims to bring “the role of the state” to centre stage and focus our
attention on questions about the role that government(s) can, do or should play in relation to
climate change, consumption and daily life.
