Shinty is a hockey type game played in Scotland, but I remember my
mother talking about playing shinty in Ireland when she was a girl. I
think she meant that while the boys played hurling the girls played
shinty, which wasn't quite so dangerous - something like that. As far
as I know shinty went to Canada with the gaelic emigrants and became
ice hockey, or so I heard somewhere.
