We have a nice set of forensic notebooks with accompanying photograph albums (late 19th-early 20th cent.) While we don't have any specific restrictions on access to this type of material (i.e. it would be assessed in the same way as anything else), we take precautions when getting visual/photographic material out in our Reading Room which could be accidentally seen by another Reader. Most recently we earmarked a desk in the Reading Room where the risk of this 'casual discovery' sufficiently low. We've previously done one-to-one invigilation in one of our Seminar Rooms - it depends on what works best at the time.
The items themselves are labelled to alert staff not to casually open without being aware of the nature of what is within. We also prohibit copies to be made as it part of our photographers' remit to have to deal with this sort of stuff.
Regards
Grant
