The Britten-Pears Foundation is pleased to have been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £1.4 million. News of our award as well as several others made to heritage projects can be found on the HLF web site - http://www.hlf.org.uk/news/Pages/Fromcastlestocomposers.aspx
This award will enable us to carry out plans to mark Benjamin Britten’s centenary in 2013 as detailed on our website - http://www.brittenpears.org/page.php?pageid=740 . Alongside the educational and centenary activities outlined, the Foundation is building a new archive centre on the Red House site, in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, which will provide a passively controlled paper and art strong room, air-conditioned audio-visual store, staff workrooms and study room. The HLF is supporting the new archive centre by providing funding for certain access and public elements such as mobile shelving and study room fit out.
Building work on the archive centre will begin in November this year and the centre will open in 2013 as part of the centenary celebrations. The building will provide improved study facilities as well as bring together under one roof collections that are currently spread across our site or in off-site storage. The environment in the main strong room will be controlled by low-energy, passive means rather than air-conditioning; one of the design features aimed at making this a sustainable building. You can find out more about the archive centre, designed by architects Stanton Williams and engineers Max Fordham, in the Britten-Pears Foundation Summer 2011 newsletter - http://www.brittenpears.org/page.php?pageid=695
To ensure the safety of our collections, we will need to close access for readers for a period of 15 months while building work takes place on the Red House site. Our reading room will therefore close from March 2012 and we aim to welcome readers back to the enhanced facilities in June 2013. During the closure period we will still operate our enquiries service ([log in to unmask]) and provide as much of a ‘long distance’ service as possible.
Best wishes
Judith
