Thanks to the many responses regarding our locked volumes. The most favoured option seems to be to cultivate a good traditional locksmith, which I will attempt to track down. This will work well for new accessions of locked items.
For items that have been requested by our researchers on the day and are found to be locked, several people offered suggestions for picking the locks with a combination of dental tools and wire. The final option, if all else fails, is to lever up the nails that hold the plates in place.
