The University of Oxford intends to make an appointment to the
Professorship of Education in the area of quantitative approaches to
educational research from 1 January 2012, or as soon as possible
thereafter. The University is seeking a social scientist with an
international reputation for quantitative social science research of
the highest quality with experience of working in the field of
Education. He or she will have experience of academic leadership and
will continue the long term development of quantitative research
within the department, one of the two strongest UK centres for
statistical analysis of educational data. The two externally funded
Research Centres in the Department, as well as five of the research
groups primarily employ quantitative methods, offering fertile ground
for the continuing development of the Department's profile in this
broad area of methodology. This vacancy arises owing to the
retirement of Professor Herb Marsh, who has worked with colleagues
within the Department of Education to develop its capacity for
quantitative approaches to educational research and will continue on
a part-time basis. The intention is to build on Professor Marsh's
academic legacy with the appointment of an outstanding researcher
with an international reputation in advanced statistical methods in
the field of Education. The successful candidate will lead a new
methodological hub focusing on advanced quantitative methods and will
demonstrate an interest in working closely with at least one of the
research groups or Centres on substantive educational issues, and
lead discussions on the operation and scope of its work in light of
his or her particular strengths and research interests. The
appointee will also be expected to maintain a successful programme of
funded research, provide leadership to early career researchers,
contribute to development of the Department's work in advanced
quantitative methods, support colleagues' research bids, teach
Master's students and supervise DPhil students.
