Although I agree with Ben I would say the ultimate aim is to enlighten
those that are listening. Personally the communication of scientific
ideas is vital because it gives more people the opportunity to
understand the process of science which has lead to the wonders we see
in the world around us and take for granted e.g. mobile phones, TV,
airplanes, people regularly live to 100+ etc. Hopefully this will lead
to increased acceptance of scientific ideas and the threats identified
such as climate change. But then I am an Environmental Scientist so am
slightly bias, which goes straight back to Bens point.
