The Decision Making and Organisation of Care (DMOC) research theme, Institute of Health and Society, Newcastle University seeks to appoint a high calibre graduate to undertake a fully funded 3 year UK/EU PhD Studentships in one of the following areas:
1. Lay and or professional views of genetic screening. This qualitative interview study will critically examine lay/professionals perceptions of the practical and ethical issues arising from genetic screening and consider the impact of technological developments on patient care. (Supervisor Nina Hallowell)
2. Decision making in musculoskeletal conditions. This ethnographic study will explore how patients and clinicians negotiate treatment decisions in a range of clinical settings. (Supervisor Tim Rapley)
3. Living on a transplant waiting list. This qualitative study will explore the personal and social impacts of waiting for an organ transplant operation on both potential donor recipients and their families. (Supervisor: Cath Exley)
4. Using choice experiments in health economic evaluation. This study will explore how choice experiments can be used in an economic evaluation as a substitute or complement to existing approaches to evaluating or designing health and social care interventions (Supervisor: Luke Vale)
DMOC is a multidisciplinary research theme which brings together social and behavioural science and clinical expertise to conduct applied health research. Our research is concerned with three broad areas: Health experiences and interactions; Professional Practice and Organisation of Care; and Shared Decision Making. Our work spans a diverse range of clinical specialities and utilises a range of research methods and methodologies.
