Dear all,
List members might be interested in the following call for papers on Archaeology and Folklore,
Cheers,
Hilary
A multidisciplinary conference on 'Popular Antiquities': Folklore and Archaeology will be held at the Institute in October 2011 and a call for papers has now been announced.
The one-day conference aims to present and discuss the relationship between folklore and archaeology, their histories, materials, aims, methods and reception, in an attempt to promote greater collaboration between the two disciplines.
Abstracts of c.250 words for 20 minute papers are invited for consideration. Papers may discuss, but are not limited to, the following topics:
The Folklore of Archaeological Sites and Objects
How the materials of archaeological study become the focus of folk tales and customs; what the meanings of these associations might be; how they impact on archaeological interpretation and public perception
The Archaeology of Folklore
The archaeological study of folk practice, craft, and objects; how this might aid in creating and contextualising ethnographies of various social/cultural groups
Folk Revivalism, Nationalism and the Appropriation of Archaeological Materials
How authoritarian or subversive movements may employ concepts and objects of folk and/or archaeological cultures in legitimising political, religious or social ideologies
Folklore and Heritage
How folklore fits into the concept of 'heritage', broadly construed, including the implications of UNESCO's 1989 'Recommendation on the Safeguarding of Traditional Culture and Folklore' and 2003 'Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage'
Transmitting Archaeology and Folklore
Issues of passing on knowledge in the past and present; how archaeology and folklore are communicated to the public, including their use in modern media such as fictional literature
Please email abstracts of c.250 words to the conference organisers, Tina Paphitis and Martin Locker by Friday 22 July 2011, to whom any enquiries should also be directed.
