ERC PhD studentship - The Origin and Diversification of Eukaryotes
(http://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/funding/search/list/cb059)
Supervisors: Professor T Embley, Professor R Boys, Dr T Nye
Sponsor: A European Research Council Advanced Fellowship award to
Professor Embley
Duration of the award: 3 years
Project description
A three-year PhD EU-funded studentship to investigate the origin of
eukaryotes using Bayesian and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses
of conserved molecular sequences. The student will build upon our
published work (Cox et al. 2008. PNAS 105:20356; Foster et
al. 2009. Phil. Trans R. Soc. Lond B Biol Sci. 364: 2197) which
suggest that essential components of the eukaryotic cell, and hence
the nuclear lineage itself, may have originated from within the
archaebacterial domain of prokaryotes. The studentship is funded by
an ERC Advanced Investigator award to Prof Martin Embley, and it is a
collaboration between a molecular biologist (Prof Embley) and
statisticians (Prof Richard Boys and Dr Tom Nye) to use and develop
complex models to study the evolution of eukaryotes. Dr Peter Foster
(The Natural History Museum, London), an expert on heterogeneous
models of sequence evolution will also be involved in training. The
project would suit a student with a facility with mathematics and
statistics and an interest in applying these skills to some of the
most interesting and challenging questions in evolutionary biology.
Value of the Award and Eligibility
A full award covers tuition fees at Home/EU rate and an annual rate of
£13,590. UK/EU and International students can apply.
Person Specification
Applicants will be expected to hold a first class or upper second
class honours degree in a relevant subject plus normally further
research experience and / or a higher degree such as for example a
MRes.
How to Apply
You must complete the University's postgraduate application
form. Select "Doctor of Philosophy (Medical Sciences) - Cell and
Molecular Biosciences" as the programme of study. Only mandatory
fields need to be completed (no personal statement required) but you
must attach a copy of your CV and a covering letter, quoting the title
of the studentship and reference number CB059.
Closing date for applications
Prompt application is advised as this post is only available until a
suitable candidate is appointed.
