The Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit (APSU) is a national
resource, established in 1993 to facilitate active surveillance of
uncommon childhood diseases including infectious, vaccine preventable,
mental health, congenital and genetic conditions and injuries to support
clinical and public health policy.
The National Centre for Immunisation and Research Surveillance (NCIRS)
has a national coordination role in research and surveillance of vaccine
preventable diseases in Australia and provides evidence to support
national immunisation policy.
The APSU and NCIRS and a group of national collaborators work together
to run the Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS)
system.
We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow to
work on existing surveillance projects and to develop new surveillance
studies. In this role you will:
* conduct literature reviews and manage data uploads, ensure data
quality, accuracy and confidentiality
* contribute to the writing of proposals for funding to bodies
such as the NHMRC, applications for ethics clearance, and funding bids
to the Department of Health and Ageing
* liaise with the APSU and PAEDS teams; attend and contribute to
all relevant meetings held internally or externally
* provide high level advice on population health methodology and
statistical analysis to the APSU and PAEDS team
* contribute to the writing of journal articles and other
publications
* write reports to funding bodies or government departments;
Contribute to the development of presentations and present these at
conferences
* develop queries in Microsoft Access and perform data analysis
including descriptive statistics, multiple comparisons, regressions and
predictive models.
To succeed in this role you will have:
* Masters Degree or PhD in medicine, epidemiology, population
health or related discipline (Level B) and extensive post-doctoral
experience (Level C)
* demonstrated experience in research in the area of
epidemiology, population health, medicine and related health and good
project management skills; Previous experience in the child health field
will be highly regarded
* a demonstrated track record of peer reviewed publications and
presentations
* experience in scientific writing including grant applications,
publications and reports for government bodies
* experience in conducting literature searches and reviews using
PubMed or equivalent
* proficiency in epidemiological methods and statistical
analysis using SPSS or similar and experience in data management using
Access databases or similar
* excellent interpersonal and liaison skills with experience
working in multidisciplinary research teams
* demonstrated experience in data management including writing
simple queries in MS Access and basic database updates.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to the national research
effort on rare diseases and to generate data to support changes in
clinical practice and policy development focused on improving health
outcomes for children and adolescents.
The position is full-time fixed term for 12 months subject to the
completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees with
the possibility of further offer of employment dependent upon funding
and need. A part-time position may be negotiated with the right
candidate if desired.
