A.                 JOB PURPOSE

The School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is seeking to appoint an academic staff member focussed on collaborative research in the discipline of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) with the academic contributing to research, teaching and administration in the School. The academic will be involved in the UNSW Research Centre for Integrated Transport Innovation (RCITI) and will collaborate on joint research projects with academic and student members of the centre.

B.                 MAIN DUTIES

General Duties

A Level B academic is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the School and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.



A Level C is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of the School.  An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.



Specific Duties

Specific duties required of a Level B academic may include:

*          The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.

*          Initiation and development of course material.

*          Acting as subject coordinators.

*          The preparation and delivery of lectures or seminars.

*          Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.

*          Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.

*          The conduct of research.

*          Involvement in professional activity.

*          Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academics.

*          Marking and assessment.

*          Consultation with students.

*          A range of administrative functions the majority of which are connected with the subjects in which the academic teaches.

*          Attendance at departmental and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.



In addition to the above, Level C is expected to:

*          Significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team.

*          Broad administrative functions.

*          Marking and assessment.

*          Attendance at departmental and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.


Appointees at level B or C will be expected to cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that their actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of others in the university

C.                 ENVIRONMENT

Position Context
The position is a three year term appointment in the UNSW School of Computer Science and Engineering.  The position involves no direct control over assets or budget other than that associated with research administration and classroom teaching and coordination.

Statistics and Research Environment
The School of Computer Science and Engineering is the premiere computing School in Australia and one of the largest schools in the Faculty of Engineering at The University of New South Wales. It comprises approximately 45 academic teaching/research staff, 20-30 research only staff, 10 conjoint academic staff, 10 technical officers (computer support) and 17 administrative staff. The School has a yearly operating budget of approximately $11M. The school has about 750 undergraduate enrolments, 160 higher degree research student enrolments and, 270 post-graduate coursework student enrolments. The School is one of UNSW's most active in research. The core research strengths of the School include artificial intelligence (including autonomous systems), database systems, embedded and operating systems, computer networks, programming languages, service oriented computing, software engineering, and computer science theory. There are state-of-the-art laboratories throughout the School to support research in all of these core areas. CSE is part of the recently launched University Centre, called RCITI (Research Centre for Integrated Transport Innovation), whose mission is to combine cutting-edge research from different schools from the University, NICTA,  and link them to key government agencies and private enterprises. The networking group within CSE is engaged in Intelligent Transport research addressing key transport issues through innovative application and integration of wireless communication including vehicular, mesh and sensor networking technologies. The facilities consist of dedicated vehicles, to conduct research in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications and a range of wireless mesh and sensor networking devices. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with the members of the networking group and collaborate with other members of the Centre and NICTA.

Reporting Relationships
The appointee will be responsible to the Head of School for teaching, research and administrative duties.  The Head of School may delegate some of the supervisory roles to Chairs of School Committees.
