Dear colleagues
Screenwriting is all about representation, so a screenplay is clearly not a film. It's the promise of a film, and what our colleagues in Belgium have done is promise us a terrific conference.
Well done to Ronald, Hugo and their colleagues for representing the conference so well that they got actual cash for it. Now that's surreal.
So this is definitely a conference. I'm definitely looking forward to it, and to the inspiration we are promised. And the beers.
See you in September...
Ian

Subject: September conference in Brussels
Dear members of the "screenwriting research network",
Today I received the message of a professional Belgian (movie finance
organisation) that they support financially the Brussels conference in september. A professional organisation support "academic research".
This is a succes. Of course the presence of JC Carrière was important to have their support, but they congratulate us because the conference is (for them) quite ambitious.
In the mean time the program is online: you can download the pdf file of the program: www.screenwriting.be/conf
Don't forget to let us known (send it all to Ronald Geerts) that you want to participate at the conference dinner on friday night (September 9th), right in the pub where surrealism is almost born, where René Margritte drunk his beers and .... maybe in that bar, he
might have the inspiration of his famous "Ceci n'est pas une Pipe".
Maybe you can sit down chair (where he drunk his beers and had this inspiration). Who knows this may inspire you for your future work.
You could write a screenplay or you could write a paper titled: "this is not a screenplay", "this is not a paper".
Allthough, after all these years (René Margritte was there in the early fifties) the chairs may have been replaced. But, let this not discourage participating at the conference dinner.
It took us a long time to get everything financed, the way we wanted it to be. Now there it is... We have a conference. Or shall we say:
"This is not a Conference", this is just the representation of a conference.
I can imagine Dr. Ian Macdonald thinking now: "You 're never sure with these surrealist guys".
Wait and see!
