Subject: Remix Theory & Praxis - Summer Seminar Series 2 - 'Authorship in Remix'

Dear remix enthusiasts,

Following the success of last week’s seminar meeting on ‘Remix & Meaning’ (thanks to all who participated), we are continuing the summer seminar series next week with our second meeting on Wednesday, 29th June 2011 at 7pm GMT. Once again, if you wish to participate and I don’t already have your Skype username, please send it to me and I will invite you to join the conversation. The theme of our next seminar is ‘Authorship in Remix’ and we will be attempting to address the question: ‘What is the role of the author in remixed content?’

The attached texts are required reading for participation in Wednesday’s seminar meeting, which will be facilitated through a text-based Skype group chat. The texts we will be discussing in relation to remix are:

NEHAMAS, Alexander. (1986). “What an author is.” The Journal of Philosophy.
BARTHES, Roland. (1968). “The death of the author.” Hill & Wang.
FOUCAULT, Michel. (2001). “What is an author?” Greenwood Press.
JASZI, Peter. (1991). “Toward a Theory of Copyright: The Metamorphoses of Authorship.” HeinOnline.

The transcript for last week’s meeting, along with the reading lists for each week are available here: http://www.remixnetwork.org/home/summer-seminar-series-2011/

Looking forward to chatting with you all next Wednesday at 7pm GMT.

Kind regards,

Owen

Dear fellow remix enthusiasts,

The [re]mix Theory & Praxis seminar group is running a summer seminar series beginning next Wednesday 15th June from 7pm – 9pm GMT and fortnightly thereafter through the summer. The theme of our first seminar is ‘Remix & Meaning’ and we will be attempting to address the question: ‘How does the semiotic meaning of sampled material change through the process of remixing?’

We would like to invite you to participate in this seminar series, the output of which we hope will lead to many fruitful collaborations and projects, as well as a deeper understanding of remix.

The attached texts are required reading / viewing for participation in Wednesday’s seminar meeting, which will be facilitated through a text-based Skype group chat. Feel free to send me your Skype username if I don’t have it already so I can invite you to join the conversation – alternatively, mine is owen.gallagher so you can simply contact me through Skype at any point before the meeting and I’ll add you to the list. The texts we will be discussing are:

BARTHES, Roland. (1977). “Rhetoric of the Image.” Image, music, text. Hill & Wang: New York.
FLUSSER, Vilém. (2000). “Towards a Philosophy of Photography.” Reaktion Books: UK.
BERGER, John. (1972). “Ways of Seeing.” BBC: London. [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnfB-pUm3eI , retrieved 7th June 2011, 6.34pm]

If I’ve left anyone out, or you know someone who might be interested in participating, please circulate the details. Looking forward to chatting with you all next Wednesday at 7pm GMT!

Kind regards,

Owen
