Special interest group for conservatoire studies
29 June at 5.30pm, Guildhall School of Music & Drama
Following the successful SEMPRE event ‘Stepping out of the shadows: Practitioners becoming researchers’, it has become apparent that conservatoire studies are emerging as a strong, cross-disciplinary field of interest, engaging musicologists, psychologists and sociologists, among others. This field is, however, relatively new, with research on school music education a more established area of enquiry. As a result of this recent interest, we have set up a special interest reading group to bring together researchers of conservatoires and researchers based in conservatoires, to look at readings relevant to the conservatoire context and to offer support to this community.
One meeting will be held each semester; the first meeting will take place from 5.30-7.00pm on Wednesday 29 June, in the John Trundle Court meeting room at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. All are welcome to attend.
The scope of our first meeting is deliberately broad, and will consider two contrasting perspectives on the roles of conservatoire training and higher education:
Rogers, R. (2002). Creating a land with music: The work, education and training of professional musicians in the 21st century. Youth Music / HEFCE.
Phipps, A. (2010). Drawing breath: Creative elements and their exile from higher education. Arts and Humanities in Higher Education, 9, 42-53.
If you wish to attend, please email Melissa Dobson or Biranda Ford, who will supply the readings and provide directions to the meeting room.
