Dear esteemed colleagues,

I am not one to contribute regularly to the list as many of the postings have often reflected dilemmas in my area of practice and the replies given have always been useful in resolving the issues I have faced. This list has proven invaluable, as well as the various attachments which I have kept and archived for future reference and use

This is my last posting as I will be emigrating to Singapore shortly where I have been offered a fantastic opportunity there and accepted it without any hesitation. Not that the remuneration package had anything to do with it!

I have even met a number of list colleagues who have become dear friends.

I have gained much from the list, my practice has been enhanced and the organisations I have worked for have benefitted as they have seen their absence rates reduced.

I am not sure if I will be able to rejoin the list after my relocation to Singapore but will endeavour to do so. For those of you who are also members of the UK Occupational Health Practitioners Facebook page, this will continue to be updated on a regular basis.

All that is left for me to thank you all for disseminating and sharing your practice information I am certain I will be able to use it in my new role.

I wish you all much great and continued success in your careers.

Grant

Without moisturization anyone can get skin dryness. Staff can moisturise theri skin AS LONG AS they are not going to wear gloves in the 10 minutes afterwards so that hyperhydration of the skin does not occur.

keeping £1 acqueous cream in their pocketand using it before breaks or any other opportunity wear gloves are not likley to be worn for 10 minutes, is the best solution to skin dryness and a if its her nails then maybe some more robust crean at night during winter may be helpful.

Dear List
I have recently seen a client who works in a healthcare setting , uses hand gel in between clients with each change of glove.
Skin problems have arisen , mild dryness, but I need to look at "soap vs. hand gel when used with gloves" evidence for change.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Or has anyone had similar issues?

regards
Pauline

Subject: Re: Vision screeners - views please (pun intended)

Hi all

My personal view - and it is a personal view and not one based on science - is that I agree with some of what you say but the looking and being more professional bit is a very important part of what we do. I have used different vision screeners over the years and also a snellen chart which
when using different venues is not something I have found easy. I don't
feel particularly professional sticking a snellen chart on a wall with a bit of blue tack or micropore, measuring out the required distance - often round various bits of furniture in a small space, putting a bit of tape on the floor and then asking the client to stand behind it and cover up each eye with card, hands, book or whatever. The client invariably leans backwards or forwards, depending on their level of long or short sightedness introducing a too much room for error and blurs the eye you're going to test
next. I also think there is too much room for error when judging degrees
of peripheral vision. Much better to have a box that takes those potential
errors away. I agree that we only screen and don't diagnose but I feel far less challengeable with a properly set up machine.

Thanks

Lindsey

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Vision screeners - views please (pun intended)

Hi everyone

I have been doing a fair bit of vision screening recently and I'm beginning to question what the value is of vision screen machines - e.g. Keystone, Optec, Titmus - compared with Snellen charts and near vision booklets (+ Ishihara for colour blind test if necessary). Are they worth the additional expense and bother of transporting? If there is a concern from a DSE user perspective, would they not be better having a full eye test by an optician, as per DSE Regs? Is there a time when using the machines has a definite advantage over simple charts? Or are we just using them to look more professional?

I'd really value your opinions.

Thanks in advance

Jane Lilley

Hi all

I have two Optec 5500 Vision screeners that I am looking to sell (excellent condition and hardly used) . They are fantastic machines to have mostly in one place but not great for portable use. Not too heavy but big. Hence I am looking for something smaller and interested in any keystones out there.
If anyone is interested in buying the Optecs and/or selling keystones or similar then please contact me off list on [log in to unmask] or mobile number below.

Thanks

Hi and happy Monday
I am wondering if anyone is aware of anything that can help me.
I have seen a person today who kneels a lot and she has fab spinal posture when she does. otherwise she has to stoop when standing.
When I have worked with tradesmen in the past and the job demands that are on their knees they can use gel knee pads in work trousers. I have tried Arco and the usual places and am looking to find an equivalent pad for a lady to use with a skirt or suit trousers.
anyone got any ideas?

Carpet fitters wear knee pads, as do roofers and other similar trades.
They`re not pretty, personally would avoid wearing them with a skirt.

There are a few chairs/stools that utilise kneeling as an adjunct in managing back pain - depends what she is doing on her knees I suppose.....try Posturite

What about a kneeling pad instead - like gardeners use.

However, check out the following for a suspender style knee pad!

Having a discussion about fees for writing reports here - a physio collegue has been asked to give some information re his clients (obviously with consent) in an OHS setting for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. A fee has been offered but he is unsure where to pitch this - I have suggested looking honestly at how much time it will take going through the notes, preparing a report etc and then charge according to his hourly rate. Any physio colleagues out there can give us a steer? - probably off list better

HI
these are what I know about.I have them in my gardening trousers and they are the best £20 i have ever spent however his lady deals with kids in a professional setting and a pair of workpants are not really a viable option- only kneeling pads I can find are high density foam the type gardeners use.

You can get trousers with ready - made pockets for the pads to fit in.
Lots of tradesmen use them - my other half buys his from ARCO From:[log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Naylor, Sharon [HMPS]

Carpet fitters wear knee pads, as do roofers and other similar trades. They`re not pretty, personally would avoid wearing them with a skirt.

Hi and happy Monday
I am wondering if anyone is aware of anything that can help me.
I have seen a person today who kneels a lot and she has fab spinal posture when
she does. otherwise she has to stoop when standing.
When I have worked with tradesmen in the past and the job demands that are on
their knees they can use gel knee pads in work trousers. I have tried Arco and
the usual places and am looking to find an equivalent pad for a lady to use with
a skirt or suit trousers.
anyone got any ideas?

Hi,

Rather than knee pads, could she have a kneeling mat, (couple of pounds), which is lightweight, that she can use when she has to kneel. Regards Suzanne

What job tasks are they? Are they fairly static? If so - the kneeling stool
which I designed in conjunction with natural living for District nurses may
be helpful...

http://www.naturalliving.co.uk/acatalog/norwich-back-pal-kneeling-stool.html

The whole point of the stool is to reduce the pressure off the knees whilst
kneeling but keeping the back in a good posture as well (the slight tilt on
the stool assists with this aspect)

Hope this helps

Hilary
