Sorry it was "a line in the sand" not "stand". But I am taking a stand here. I agree that the library as leisure centre, which is basically what we're talking about here, is an attractive proposition (for some) and would definitely make us all much more popular. However, I didn't go to the trouble of getting my Dip Lib and then chartering for this kind of activity. Libraries are specifically for studying and learning and if we lose sight of that then I positively guarantee that there will be no such profession as librarianship in 100 or possibly even 50 years' time. This is as true for medical libraries as it is for public libraries or any other library. I would even be willing to bet on this but feel that much as I'd like to be, I may not be around then to collect my winnings!
