Readers just ignore our signs. I don't like telling them off not because I am shy but because unlike many libraries we don't get that many visitors (compared to say a hospital-based library). Our members are scattered all over the UK.
However, I don't think progress will stop just because it presents a slightly insoluble problem for librarians. How long ago was it when laptops were not allowed in libraries? Smartphones are almost universal now anyway and used for a multitude of purposes over and above phone calls. The quiet zone or studdy carrels must be the way ahead. Surely.
