italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Renaissance Society of America - Meeting in Washington, DC, March 22-24, 2012
Leonardo the Writer
For good reason, the familiar monikers Leonardo the Artist and
Leonardo the Scientist are frequently attached to Leonardo da Vinci.
Leonardo the Writer, however, is still infrequent. Leonardo’s
surviving manuscripts, however, suggest that, for him, the written
word was an indispensable means of expression and communication. The
aim of this panel is to explore this lesser-known aspect of Leonardo’s
production, as well as to seek fresh approaches to what has already
been said about his written work. In addition to his well-known
Paragone and art treatise, Leonardo wrote fables and many other short
literary forms (e.g., aphorisms, riddles), allegories, imaginary
letters and descriptions, transcriptions, and proems. While this panel
welcomes papers examining the intermingling between word and image, it
wishes to draw particular attention to Leonardo’s capacity as a writer
and to his written production as an independent medium for his
cultural and professional development. Papers may discuss, but are not
limited to, the nature, function, and philosophical implications of
Leonardo’s writings, intertextuality, written and/or linguistic
idiosyncrasies, and interpretations of his fragmented texts according
to their temporal and spatial attributes.
Paper proposals (150 words) and a one-page CV should be sent to
Filomena Calabrese at [log in to unmask] by June 12.
Participants should begin/renew their RSA membership by August, 2011.
