Celebrating Sanctuary – Defending Rights
It’s 60 years since the Geneva Convention firmly established commitments
to asylum and protection of refugees. Today the British government, like
most European states, does more to exclude refugees than to welcome them.
What’s happened to asylum and to ideals of sanctuary? Why are refugees
made unwelcome? Why are so many detained and deported? What’s behind the
media assault on forced migrants?
The Refugee Studies team at the University of East London invites you to
start Refugee Week by joining a discussion and workshop on how we
celebrate sanctuary and defend refugee rights, exploring issues of
re-settlement, voice, well-being and agency.
