Hello
Opera singer and Leeds Phd student Jessica Walker has devised a show for Opera North with Neil Bartlett: The Girl I Left Behind Me, touring again this summer (Buxton, Frome Festival, Barbican in the autumn), in which she impersonates famous male impersonators, eg. Vesta Tilley and Ella Wesener, and talks about their lives on- and offstage.

Well if you're following the Vesta Tilly route then you should look at Bea
Lillie and Gertrude Lawrence in their work for Andre Charlot - this in
itself partly inspired Noel Coward to write Red Peppers in which Gertie then
played a sailor and a man about town alongside Coward. There is also The
Recruiting Officer - famed for its role en traveste and that would lead you
to Cherubino in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro - I am not sure if the same rule
applied to the Beaumarchais play - and then Sibel in Gounod's Faust.

regarding plays that deal with the theme of female crossdressing- that is
specifically female characters who dress as men. It can be from any time
scale (although, I'm pretty secure on Shakespeare's use of it). Any further
reading (books, articles etc) that highlights it would be great too.
Ideally, I'm looking for more mdoern representations of it (post Top Girls).
