The June 2011 edition of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC) newsletter is online at: http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Newsletters/Newsletter.119.June.2011.pdf
The newsletter mailing has been held up by the Canada Post lock-out. This is a problem because EPC is a donations dependent group. The inability to receive donations through the mail is creating a financial crisis.
Please donate online at: http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm or call the office toll free at: 1-877-439-3348 to donate by credit card.
EPC is hiring a full-time bookkeeper/office manager. We are restructuring our office. EPC is seeking one full-time person who is an experienced bookkeeper, is capable of maintaining a large data base, good people skills and well-organized. We are waiting for the decision by the Appeals court in the Rasouli case. The precedent setting Rasouli will determine whether doctors are required to obtain consent before withdrawing life-sustaining treatment. The lawyers for the doctors are arguing that doctors are not required to obtain consent to withdraw medical treatment.
EPC received intervener status in the Rasouli case. On May 18, I attended the legal arguments by the lawyers in the case. The cost for EPC to intervene in the Rasouli case was more than $20,000 and we have currently raised $5000 toward the total cost.
The BC Civil Liberties Association (Carter case) and the Farewell Foundation of BC are both attempting to strike down, through the court, our laws that protect vulnerable people from euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada. On June 14, these groups went before a judge in a Vancouver court room for a case-management meeting. EPC had legal representation at this meeting because we are seeking intervener status in these cases.
On Friday, EPC had a conference call with our leaders. We unanimously decided to support the direction of our legal team in these cases. Our legal team is led by Hugh Scher.
We are very thankful to our monthly donors who are donating by credit card or post-dated check. The postal lock-out has proven how important it is to have regular monthly donors. Please consider donating or becoming a monthly donor by contacting the office at: 1-877-439-3348.
