The biggest problem with the current map is that the biggest compass-direction distortions are centered around the tourist areas of Waterloo-Charing cross-Leicester sq. The bend in the river at waterloo was removed for simplicity, and the northern line made to look as if it goes directly north. This means that lots of tourists, new residents and quite a lot of everyone else get completely lost.
However, rather than change the tube map into another (less simple) version, TfL have done the legible London project. This involves A-Z style street maps up every few meters to encourage walking and cycling, which is monetarily more efficient in their cost-benefits than incremental increases in tube use efficiency. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/microsites/legible-london/default.aspx
