*Ph.D. Student Position*

(For *3 years,* to start on 1 November 2011).
A Ph.D. Student Position is available in the Research Project “From
Oriental to the Cool City. Changing Imaginations of Istanbul, Cultural
Production and the Production of Urban Space.” The project is directed
by Dr. Derya Özkan, funded by the DFG Emmy Noether Program and hosted by
the Institute of European Ethnology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in
Munich. The project will be launched on 1 November 2011.
The position will be paid according to TV-L 13 (50%) and will allow the
Ph.D. Student to work on her/his own dissertation, which will focus on
the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Program and attempt to
identify the Program's role in the consolidation of the emerging image
of “cool” Istanbul. The Ph.D. Student is expected to contribute to the
Research Project in several ways: by taking part in the overall research
activities of the Project, by organizing a workshop related to her/his
own doctoral research topic, and by contributing to the organization of
the conference to take place in the third year of the Research Project.
The Ph.D. Student will design, carry out and complete her/his doctoral
research with Dr. Derya Özkan as her/his Ph.D. Supervisor.
The Research Project has an interdisciplinary scope, engaging primarily
with issues that concern the fields of Urban Studies and Cultural
Studies. Cultural Anthropology, Visual Culture Studies and Urban
Geography are also fields that the project will draw on. Candidates with
backgrounds in various disciplines are invited to apply. Familiarity
with qualitative research methods and anthropological fieldwork is an
advantage. Fluency in Turkish and English is a must. German language
skills is not a requirement but is an advantage.
