*Chinese urban spatio-temporal developments in perspective*
Organised by Martin Dijst (Utrecht University) and Donggen Wang (Hong
Kong Baptist University)
China is experiencing tremendous demographic, economic and cultural
changes. This is amongst others, expressed in large scale urbanization,
rapid motorization of the transport system and transformation of the
housing market. Compared to Europe and the USA the developments in China
are not only more voluminous but are also taking place at a higher pace
which both put high demands on environmental and social qualities of life.
To date, comparisons between Chinese cities are limited in number. Most
studies are focused on spatio-temporal developments in the fields of
housing, mobility and social issues in single major cities, like
Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. However, the Chinese urban landscape is
much richer in variety which meaning is hardly understood. Also the
large differences in economic, social, cultural and urban contexts with
western and other Asian counterparts might cause differences in
urbanization patterns and the organization of daily lives in cities. We
thus seek to organize a session (or sessions) that address(es)
differences and similarities in urbanization, mobility, housing, social
and environmental issues between Chinese cities and with non-Chinese
cities in Asia, Europe, the USA or elsewhere. These comparisons could
contribute to a deeper understanding of urban developments.
We welcome submissions that examine topics including but not limited to:
* Mobility issues
* Housing and social issues
* Cultural and ethnic differences
* Gender issues
* Segregation and cohesion
* Policies
