I believe tha CLOs have a remarkably difficult job. Technically it is challenging but the associated stresses and strains of planners, lawyers, building control, etc would be enough to drive anyone insane. Often the technical arguments get sidelines due to internicine struggles between departments in the local authority.
As a sideline... from my 20 years in the industry and as a chartered chemist and scientist I have found that most geologists and geotechnical engineers DO NOT have a good grasp of chemistry... in the same way that I DO NOT have a good grasp of geology, geotech, civ eng, etc. The number of times I have had to bail out VERY senior and experienced geotech engineers who thought they had a good understanding of chemistry when they scheduled inappropriate contaminant chemical testing is disappointly large.
... but I agree none of us should be too proud to ask an expert. Also there is no such thing as a stupid question only a stupid answer. Asking questions and looking for answers is what we are all about here.
