I can sort of understand that companies researching new product do not necessarily want their competitors to know what they are playing around with, I just hope they take appropriate measures to minimise any risks.
What I have noticed when researching product names that have been raised during desk studies, is that some companies are fairly unwilling to divulge the ingredients in established products.
On a site I investigated a while ago I managed to get hold of some old pictures (1960's and 1970's) which showed drums of 'Gunk' and 'Jizer' degreasants outside a dwelling which lead to suspicions about the use of the property for car maintenance. The solvents used in these products are fairly straightforward but before I carried out any analysis I wanted to check the actual ingredients, icluding any by-product impurities, with the manufacturers (Deb). Their customer services and tech enquiries people gave me product information which listed just 'hydrocarbon solvents'. The MSDS safety sheet was no better.
Aside from new products being researched, it would seem that with established branded products, defining the contents does not always appear to be possible.
