VII International Sinology Forum ? provisory programme
????
Sky, Man, Continent, Sea
The Portuguese Institute of Sinology is currently organizing its 7th International Sinology Forum, to be held in 2012, 1-3 March in Oporto on the topic ?Sky, Man, Continent, Sea". For this purpose it is welcoming papers from specialists on China, in particular researchers, scholars and postgraduate students. The 7th International Sinology Forum will, like in past editions, be following a multidisciplinary approach and will be looking forward to congregating a wide range of analyses from a variety of perspectives.
Beneath the sky/Heaven (??), the land, the continent (?) where Man (?) has lived for millennia and given rise to a China which has established itself as a great world power. To the west of China the harsh climate of the mountainous and desert lands of Inner Asia. To the east the seas (?) that have long ceased to act as a barrier to the Chinese in their travels. It is that great and vigorous China we intend to talk about and make known in its amazing greatness, at the VII International Sinology Forum.
The sky/heaven (?) reminds us of religious thought and the great schools of philosophy in China.
The continent (?) leads us to the environment, and thoughts concerning renewable energies and natural resources.
The sea (?) takes our thoughts to the great naval epics, economic resources, trade, and migration routes.
Man (?) created society, family and ways of conquering resources such as the sea, the land and heaven itself by invoking the gods.
Art, economics, literature, science and technology are only some aspects of human adaptation to the surrounding environment.
It is in this idea of a Global China, with mankind at its centre and its ability to work and creative spirit that underlies the spirit of the VII Forum.
The organizers invite papers dealing with any of the following proposed topics:
1- The sky / Heaven (?)
i. Considering harmony and superiority: the philosophical thought of Confucianism and neo-Confucianism
ii. Health, maladies and Chinese traditional medicine: scientific theories and empirical practices
iii. Taoism and Chinese Buddhism though the centuries and today
2- The continent (?)
i. Organizing the use of space: the unique role of Fengshui in the Chinese landscape
ii. Internal migrations: city/countryside relations in the era of globalization
iii. Protecting the environment and securing natural resources: China?s greatest priorities?
3 ? The Sea (?)
i. Migration routes to other lands, distant and near
ii. The Sea as a source of wealth: marine resources and their exploitation
iii. Maritime trade in historical times and today
4- Man (?)
i. The legacy of the Past: major recent discoveries and their archaeological importance
ii. Cultural and social dynamics through History
iii. China?s creative spirit: New Literatures, new Arts, new Media
iv. China?s legal heritage and modern judicial system
5 ? The Sky, the Continent, the Sea and Mankind

Please send abstracts of proposed papers (together with a short Curriculum Vitae of no more than one page) to [log in to unmask] by 30 July 2011.
