Hey Claire,
The Prog does this well, the cheaper USB-UIRT appears to allow it but you have to email the support crew to get the programme (not done this)... (Not sure about the TIRA).Combined with AutoHotKey this would make a nice system...
[ Technically, as the USB-UIRT and TIRA both have APIs so you could find a nice techie to write the command line programme (shame, you've just missed the accessibility hack run by Steve! http://fullmeasure.co.uk/a11yhack/). ]

Thanks Will,
Do you know if any of the software does have good ability for control via keyboard shortcuts? The clients PA (who is super techy) told me that all the software he had tried didn't seem to have keyboard shortcuts.

Use the RC-1 remote controller that is available for the canon DSLRs (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-RC-1-Wireless-Remote-R
evi
ew.aspx) and learn the codes in your programme of choice:
- The Grid
- Communicator
- WDPS IRCommand: http://www.wdpsoftware.com/
- EventGhost (free): http://www.eventghost.org/
There is of course other software out there if you want to view the live output on your screen like DSLRPro:
http://www.breezesys.com/DSLRRemotePro/
Also: http://www.hartcw.com/
And: http://remoteyourcam.bitbrothers.org/ (for android)
And: http://www.sofortbildapp.com/ (for Mac)
