We require an enthusiastic and friendly Reading Room Assistant to help researchers accessing the library and archive collections of the Museum of English Rural Life and Special Collections. This one year fixed term appointment will enable a suitable candidate who wishes to pursue a career in Archive/Library Services to acquire relevant knowledge and skills before applying for a postgraduate course.
Duties include retrieval of material for readers, assisting with search room invigilation, returning reserved items, answering enquiries and photocopying. The candidate should possess good communication skills, work well as part of a team and be committed to providing a professional service for researchers. As well as specific on-the-job training there will be opportunities to gain a wider understanding of MERL and the Special Collections via induction and training with colleagues.
You will have:
. Good verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively and professionally with enquiries from researchers in a reading room environment.
. Enthusiasm, commitment to providing a professional service for researchers and approachable and friendly.
. IT skills - competence in MS Office, use of databases, internet, email.
. Previous experience of study or working with archives/library materials.
This graduate trainee post would offer an opportunity for pre course experience prior to a postgraduate qualification in archives or library work.
