3 year, funded PhD - 'Facilitating and Improving the Analysis and Reporting of Mixed Treatment Comparisons in Health Technology Assessment'
Project information
Applications are invited for a three-year fully funded PhD project to start in October 2011. The project will be supervised by Professor Alex Sutton, Professor Nicola Cooper and Dr Sylwia Bujkiewicz and hosted within the Biostatistics Research Group, Department of Health Sciences, University of Leicester
Funding for the project will provide full support for the UK/EU tuition fee and an annual stipend at RCUK rates (£13,590 for the 2011/12 academic year). Funding is also provided for a Research Training Support Grant and conference allowance.
Mixed treatment comparison (MTC) approaches to synthesis are extensions of more established meta-analysis methods. They have great potential for estimating the comparative effectiveness of multiple treatments using an evidence base of trials which individually do not compare all treatment options. They are increasingly being used by decision makers, such as the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in England and Wales.
The overall aims of this project are to: i) Improve the standard and reporting of MTC analyses; ii) Develop a user-friendly interactive software interface for WinBUGS (Bayesian specialist software) to facilitate the conduct of MTC analyses; iii) Extend the interface to facilitate the implementation of specific clinical (risk-benefit) and economic (cost-effective) decision model structures, utilising the results of MTC analyses; and iv) Develop novel statistical methodology as required for aims i) to iii) above.
