3-Year PhD Studentship

Health Impacts of Bioaerosols from Large Scale Biocomposting Waste Facilities

Available from October 2011

-----

Applications are invited for a prestigious 3-year PhD studentship within the MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health, starting in October 2011.

-----

Project Outline

This three year studentship aims to investigate whether people living near large-scale waste composting sites and potentially exposed to bioaerosols have higher rates of hospital admissions or reproductive health problems than in the general population. There are currently over 200 large composting sites in the UK and ~2,500 smaller sites. These sites could give rise to significant exposures to ambient bioaerosols - whose components include fungal spores, live bacteria, allergens and respiratory sensitisers (e.g. endotoxin).

The project will involve carrying out a small area health epidemiological study, to investigate the relationship between bioaerosol exposure in the vicinity of composting sites and risks of hospital admissions and reproductive health problems, using data available from the Small Area Health Statistics Unit at Imperial College. Exposure estimation will draw on Geographical Information System (GIS) based methods and dispersion modelling (for regulated sites only) based on emission characteristics and meteorological data.

The student will need to work closely with the Bioaerosols study consortium, involving Imperial, Cranfield University, the Open University, the National Physical Laboratory and the Environment Agency who are currently working on a Dept for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) funded project measuring emissions round representative sites. There will also be close liaison with Defra, the Environment Agency and Health Protection Agency. The results are highly relevant to and will potentially influence waste management policy in the UK and any findings are likely to have a high-profile.

The studentship would be ideal for someone with an MSc in epidemiology or equivalent with an interest in environmental exposure assessment and a view to a career in environmental epidemiology, alternatively someone from an environmental sciences MSc or equivalent with experience in GIS and an interest in health risk assessment and epidemiology. Epidemiological and GIS support and expertise will be available through the supervisors and within the MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health.

-----

As a minimum, attainment of a UK 2:1 degree or equivalent, and appropriate training at Masters level in a relevant discipline is expected. Successful applicants must fulfil the College admissions criteria prior to enrolment. The studentships provide a stipend at the Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine rate. Tuition fees are covered at the Home/EU rate. There is no provision for overseas (non Home/EU) student fees within this scheme.
