Biomedical and public health research is undertaken in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML).
The FHML and the Maastricht Academic Hospital merged to form the eighth university medical centre in the Netherlands. Top specialist care, academic education and research are some of the main tasks of Maastricht UMC+. This is characterised by synergy between biomedical and public health research. Its research schools carry out innovative and ground-breaking research inspired by the cooperation between medical professionals, life scientists and health scientists. The hospital departments are closely linked with the research schools in an original and integrated research and patient care chain to link research and top patient care in a truly translational manner.
The Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN) is an internationally oriented faculty which aims for:
· a distinctive education offer through Problem Based Learning (PBL) of top European quality. Therefore it offers part of its education in English; The faculty considers PBL an excellent vehicle for creating a qualitatively excellent and elegant coherence between education and research.
· first-rate research on selected themes in cognitive and biological psychology , active cooperation with institutions and companies, regionally, nationally and internationally. The research is organized in four departments: Clinical Psychological Science<http://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/web/Clinical-psychological-science/ClinicalPsychologicalScience.htm>, Cognitive Neuroscience<http://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/web/Faculties/FPN/Theme/Research/CognitiveNeuroscience2.htm>, Work and Social Psychology<http://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/web/Faculties/FPN/Theme/Research/WorkAndSocialPsychology1.htm>, and Neuropsychology and Psychopharmacology<http://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/web/Neuropsychology-and-psychopharmacology/NeuropsychologyAndPsychopharmacology.htm>. The FPN also has a small group of statisticians who participate in the dept. of Methodology & Statistics of the FHML.
Since 2010 the FPN and Jülich have an affiliation contract on ultra high field fMRI research. Jülich already operates a 9.4 Tesla scanner; the FPN will operate their 9.4 Tesla scanner from autumn 2012
The intention is to merge the FHML's Department of Methodology & Statistics with the section Methods & Statistics of the FPN Faculty Office to create an interfaculty Department of Methodology & Statistics (M&S).

Tasks and responsibilities:
General
The Methodology and Statistics field includes a number of methodological and statistical areas that are important to the education and research conducted at Maastricht UMC+ and the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN).
The first area, Optimal Research Designs, can be defined as the statistical calculation of (research) design characteristics that help translate the researcher's design choice into better, more efficient result estimates and a greater capacity of statistical tests with the smallest possible sample size.
The second area, Statistical Analysis, is closely related to the first and involves researching methods of statistical analysis for clinical trials and randomised multi-centre and cluster trials.
The third area of Methodology and Statistics concerns research into the Quality of Measurements.
Research
The research will have to be further developed in a multidisciplinary way that includes intensifying cooperation with the research schools.
Education
Statistics and methodological research is offered by various programmes both within and outside the FHML and FPN. In addition to bachelor's courses in health sciences and medicine, statistical education is also offered by various master's programmes and research masters. PhD courses also cover certain statistical topics. In addition to offering statistical education to FHML and FPN students, it is also offered to the Teachers Academy and the University College Maastricht.
The chair will have final responsibility for all methodological and statistical education provided by the department and must ensure that this education is properly integrated within the programme.
Profile:
* A PhD graduate with an outstanding reputation for international methodological and statistical research;
* Management personality: demonstrable experience in leading research projects and management qualities that allow him/her to bring about a cultural transformation towards a multidisciplinary approach to research and education;
* Broad knowledge of and insight into the field of methods and statistics; capable of further developing key areas of interest by acquiring external research grants and funds;
* Demonstrable and extensive experience with teaching methodology and statistics in a multidisciplinary and integrated way;
* A specialist in at least one of the aforementioned areas of the methods and statistics discipline, as evidenced by publications in international (peer-reviewed) statistics journals;
* Broad experience in solving the problems associated with the statistical methods used during research at Maastricht UMC+ and FPN, as evidenced by co-authorship of publications;
* Demonstrable success in supervising PhD candidates;
* As head of the interfaculty workgroup for methodology and statistics, the candidate must be capable of monitoring and controlling the developments in the field;
* Willing and able to conduct administrative duties for Maastricht UMC+.

Terms of employment
